Today I operate Carter Research, a professional-services firm that provides strategy, new business development, implementation support, and operations consulting to the education industry.

Across my career I have been president of National Heritage Academies, a charter school management company that operates over 75 schools in nine states, president of CfBT USA—the U.S. affiliate of CfBT Education Trust, the head of global corporate social responsibility for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and the executive director of the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Foundation.

In addition to No Excuses and On Purpose, I have edited three other books including Mary Beth Klee’s Core Virtues, a literature-based character education program for parents and teachers of elementary school students. My articles, essays, and columns have appeared in over 180 newspapers and magazines.

I have three daughters: Kirby (13), Casey (11), and Lucy (8). We live in Washington, D.C.
